When a crime has been committed and you file a complaint at the police station, the police officer will give you a receipt called CSR as a proof of the receipt of the complaint. The complete English description of this CSR is Community Service Register. Community Service Register in Tamil. It can also be said. Also this CSR can be called Petition Acknowledgment Certificate and Daily Diary Report, though it has many names, Petition Receipt is the most popular one.

Social Service Register (CSR) is a register maintained for non-cognizable crime in every Indian police station. If the offense is a cognizable offence, a First Information Report (FIR) is made and registered. A CSR is also known as daily diary report or diary report.

What are the validities and value of CSR?
CSR (Social Service Register) is only a source to register a complaint, so the validity of CSR is not much. The onus is on the police to answer to higher authorities about their actions on CSR. Generally, the police may close the case as false or even with no response from the complainant, the case may be closed easily. Try to convert the CSR into FIR without leaving the complaint filed at the police station with receipt. Only then will it have some value.
What is the duration of CSR?
There is no specific time frame for closing CSR but after 3 years it will be closed if you act on your complaint without delay your case will be closed.
CSR and FIR Registration Procedures in Indian Police Station?
If a crime is committed and it can be resolved or both parties reach an amicable compromise, that crime is called non-cognizable offenses. In law, compromise can be taken for such crimes. FIR will be registered in case of non-compromise situation.
A police station can be approached to file a complaint against any crime in an Indian police station. If it is a cognizable offence, the police officer should make an FIR. FIR stands for First Information Report. It contains the date, place and all details of the crime. The police officers should provide a free copy of the FIR to the complainant. After providing the copy the police authorities will start investigation and other legal procedures related to the case.
